On the 11th Day of Christmas: Mistletoe

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Leave it to our friends north of the border to come up with the best Christmas commercial I’ve seen in 10 years. Hint: Things are not always what they seem under the mistletoe.

On the 10th Day of Christmas: Beer & Lights

Monday, December 14th, 2009

This commercial from Miller Light combines two of my favorite Christmas things: beer and a dazzling light show accompanied by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

On the 9th Day of Christmas: Hannukah

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Since Christmas now starts in October and lasts well into January, I’m taking liberties by prolonging my 12 day of Christmas commercials.

Growing up in the south, I didn’t know or have any Jewish friends (much different today). I always saw Hannukah on the calendar and it always fell in the middle of December as we were putting up our tree and setting up the nativity scenes. I didn’t know much about it, except that if I celebrated it, I’d get eight days of presents versus just one. This Christmas vs. Hannukah “commerical” plays off the PC vs. Mac debate, and would’ve been helpful in the 80’s to help understand all the differences.

On the 8th Day of Christmas: Santa Busted

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Don’t underestimate kids insatiable appetite to see the big guy delivering the goods. In the 80’s these kids rigged a Polaroid camera for a glimpse. Today, kids would rig up a webcam with a direct feed to their website and Youtube for the whole family and world to discover that the big guy comes in the disguise of their parents. If a kid can operate a remote control at the age of 1, don’t think for a minute they won’t figure a way to use technology to catch Santa in the act.

On the 7th Day of Christmas: Landlines

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Once upon a time, kids were tied to one place by good old-fashioned landlines and phone cords. This AT&T commercial from the mid-80’s reminds of us a pre-ADD society when we actually had conversations without doing anything else.
